Products & Finishes FAQs
Products
Our product pages show an estimated lead time for each item, for example, ships in 2 to 5 business days or made to order in 10 to 20 working days. These timeframes are a guide and can vary by finish, quantity, and current order volumes. If your order is time-critical, contact our team with the product code, finish, and quantity, and we’ll confirm the best available estimate before you purchase.
We do not display live stock quantities online. Instead, each product page provides an estimated lead time based on typical availability. If an item is temporarily unavailable or your order includes made-to-order finishes, your order may be processed as a backorder and dispatched as stock becomes available. For a confirmed ETS, please contact us before ordering.
If an item is not available for immediate dispatch, we’ll contact you with an updated estimated dispatch timeframe. You can choose to proceed, amend the order, or split the order for part shipment.
All products are designed in Australia and most of our products are manufactured in our Melbourne factory. Some heavy forging and casting are mainly done off shore in various countries, but all products are assembled, plated and polished in Australia to ensure we deliver quality product and offer you 100% satisfaction.

Depending on the product, your handles will typically be made from brass, stainless steel or timber.
The majority of Designer Doorware handles are made from brass. As a material, it provides the greatest custom design capabilities. It’s surface properties also allow brass handles to be finished in a wide variety of Special Finishes too.
Stainless steel products come in one of two available grades – 304 stainless steel and 316 stainless steel. Both varieties are highly resistant to wear and tear. However, 316 stainless steel is classed as a Marine Grade steel to make it very corrosion-resistant.
Generally, our timber products are made from Victorian Ash or Tasmanian Oak and sourced from AFS (Australian Forestry Standard) or PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) timber. A number of other timber species such as Spotted Gum are available upon request by sending us an email to sales@designerdoorware.com.au
For Australian fittings, if you are standing on the inside of the door and the door handle is to be fitted on the right-hand-side, then a ‘right hand internal’ door handle is required. If it is on the left, then a ‘left hand internal’ door handle is required. Either of these will dictate that the other half of the door handle set is an external handle on the opposite side. See next question for further clarification of Designer Doorware’s door lever on plate handing.
For Australian fittings, if you are standing on the inside of the door and the door handle is to be fitted on the right hand side, then a 'right hand internal' door handle and plate is required and must be coupled with a 'left hand external' door handele and plate, as per the diagram below.
If you are standing on the inside of the door and the door handle to be fitted is on the left, then a 'left hand internal' door handle and plate is required, along with a 'right hand external' door handle and plate.
Our door handle levers can be fitted to any sliding or pivot doors, cupboards or gates made out of various materials including aluminum, steel, wood, semi- solid, solid and hollow core doors. On some aluminum doors and frames, we will need to modify the lever so that it does not interfere with the aluminum frame, as the backset may be very narrow. This will avoid the handle hitting the frame as the door opens.

Custom Design
We begin our custom designs with your ideas and follow an easy step-by-step process. See our Bespoke Design Service and check out our Custom Products pages for more details.
Standard custom hardware: up to 20 working days from approval. Complex or high-volume projects: up to 8 weeks. This includes design, prototyping, manufacturing and finishing. The 3D printed prototype stage typically takes up to 1 week.
There is no minimum order. We have manufactured single bespoke pieces for residential projects and hundreds of units for commercial developments. The process is the same regardless of quantity.
Yes. Send us a photo, a sketch, or the physical piece itself. Our design team will reverse-engineer it and produce detailed drawings for your approval before manufacturing.
That is how most custom projects start. A sketch on paper, a photo from a hotel lobby, a description of what you want. Our product designers will develop the concept into a fully engineered design.
Design and prototyping costs are typically included in the project when Designer Doorware is manufacturing and supplying the hardware. We will confirm this at the consultation stage.
We manufacture in solid brass, stainless steel (304 and 316 grade), ABS (for prototyping), hardwood, and concrete composites. All custom pieces are available in our full range of PVD and plated finishes.
We print a full-scale model on our in-house 3D printers using ABS. You receive the physical prototype to hold, test the ergonomics, check the proportions, and confirm the design. Only after your written approval do we proceed to manufacturing.
Under 0.25%. This is a direct result of our sign-off drawing and 3D printed prototype process. You approve the exact product before we manufacture it. No surprises.
Finishes
