the formation
A defining turning point came in 1996 when Joseph Di Benedetto and Felix Pittella merged their respective businesses to form Designer Doorware. The company was officially incorporated in December of that year, bringing together shared expertise in manufacturing, product development, and architectural hardware design.
With a clear focus on craftsmanship and innovation, Designer Doorware began building a reputation within the architectural and design community. The company’s approach centered on producing hardware that balanced functional engineering with refined design, responding to the evolving needs of architects and designers.
Growth followed quickly. In 2001, Designer Doorware opened its first showroom in Richmond, Victoria, an industry-first initiative that allowed architects, builders, and designers to experience the full product range in person. As demand continued to increase, the business relocated its head office and factory to a purpose-built office and warehouse in Sunshine West in 2002, supporting a growing team and expanding inventory.

The heart and soul of Designer Doorware began with young married couple John Natale Di Benedetto and Maria Chiappalone. In 1976, they set sail for Australia carrying a creative dream and the determination to build something meaningful.
Coming from entrepreneurial families, they combined their names to establish ‘Natmar’ in the late 1970s. What began as a modest venture would quietly lay the foundation for a family legacy in architectural door hardware, one built on craftsmanship, resilience, and a belief that even the smallest design details matter.

expanding across Australia
By the mid-2000s, Designer Doorware was entering a new phase of growth. Sales offices were established in Sydney and Brisbane, strengthening the company’s national presence while opening pathways to international markets.
Retail showrooms continued to evolve, and investments in technology helped streamline operations and support rapid expansion. In 2007, Joseph Di Benedetto became the sole shareholder of the business, guiding the company through its next stage of development.
During this period, Designer Doorware began establishing international partnerships, including a national distribution agreement in the United States and a growing dealer network across North America. Product engineering teams and structured quality management practices were introduced, ensuring each piece of hardware met rigorous standards of performance and reliability.
global reach and continued innovation
Designer Doorware continued to expand its capabilities over the years that followed. In 2013, the acquisition of Matnick Security Services introduced locksmithing, access control, and electronic security services into the business, broadening its expertise in architectural and security solutions.
As operations grew, the company moved in 2017 to a purpose-built factory and warehouse facility in Altona, Victoria. This modern space enabled greater manufacturing capacity and improved logistics while supporting the development of new product designs.
International recognition soon followed. With a growing dealer network across the United States and the United Kingdom, as well as a joint venture showroom in Beverly Hills, California, Designer Doorware strengthened its presence in global design markets. Multiple international design awards further affirmed the company’s commitment to creating architectural hardware that meets the needs of contemporary architecture.
