St. Regis New York
Stood on the corner of Fifth Avenue and 55th Street since September 1904, and it remains one of Manhattan’s most celebrated addresses. Its guest rooms and suites combine classic and contemporary design, with silk wall coverings, deeply carved crown mouldings, and wainscoting. Salvador Dalí and Marlene Dietrich were among its long-term residents. In 2013, the hotel began a major renovation led by Stonehill & Taylor architects, which included refurbished suites, redecorated guest rooms, a renovated lobby and an expanded spa.
design brief
Hunter Roberts Construction Group brought Designer Doorware into the $90 million renovation of the hotel’s guest rooms and suites. Preserving the hotel’s heritage was central to the project. Stonehill & Taylor wanted to carry forward details from the original French Beaux-Arts building by Trowbridge & Livingston, so they commissioned a lever and rose based on the hotel’s original fittings.
customised door hardware solution
We started from the original Louis XV lever. Using 3D scanning and reverse engineering, we made an exact replica that keeps the St. Regis insignia. We then designed a matching rose in-house and produced eight hundred of them in solid brass, each with the signature St. Regis feathers stamped around its edge.
We also worked with Saflok so the lever would operate smoothly with the hotel’s electronic entry locks. That gave a 1904 design a modern level of security.
Both lever and rose are finished in lacquered polished brass. This gives a rich honey tone, and the clear lacquer protects against tarnishing so the brass keeps its colour through daily hotel use.

More than a century after it first opened, the St. Regis still greets guests with the same lever its original architects chose.
