Klein Bottle House
On Melbourne’s Mornington Peninsula, McBride Charles Ryan (MCR) set out to design a house with the strange beauty of the Klein Bottle, a mathematical surface that folds back into itself. The goal was to pair dramatic architecture with the delicacy of its natural setting. MCR’s multi-award-winning design uses Designer Doorware’s door hardware to suit its contemporary concept.
design brief
The holiday house sits among the tea trees of the Mornington Peninsula. From the outset, the clients and MCR wanted a building tucked into the tree line, where the occupants would feel surrounded by their environment. MCR also wanted to show that dramatic architecture can still respond closely to a sensitive, protected landscape.
The door hardware had to fit the eclectic Klein Bottle form and be durable and reliable enough to handle harsh seaside conditions.
MCR wanted to stay true to the geometry while making it work as a home. They settled on an origami version of the Klein Bottle, partly for its unusual beauty and partly because it could be built in fire-resistant compressed fibre cement sheet.
door hardware solution
MCR chose the Quad range for its clean geometry, which offsets the house’s folded planes, bold colour and unusual series of internal spaces. Quad levers on R50 roses are paired with matching escutcheons, turn snibs and emergency releases, and FP903 flush pulls keep the sliding doors flush and uncluttered.
“The clean, timeless lines of the chosen Designer Doorware products work well with the unexpected shape, the distinct, bold, clean colour and the unique series of internal spaces. It provides classic stability amongst the avant-garde. It is new, it is fresh, it is timeless.” — McBride Charles Ryan
- Door handles: Quad lever on R50 rose
- Door handle accessories: Quad E54 escutcheons, cylinders, E51 turn snibs and E52 emergency release
- Sliding door hardware: FP903 flush pulls
In a house without a single conventional angle, the door furniture gives a steady, straight-lined counterpoint, letting the architecture stand out without competing with it.
