Ballarat House

Rachcoff Vella Architecture was formed in 2007 when directors Tony Vella and Stephen Rachcoff merged their individual practices. The firm focuses on distinctive, high-quality design that challenges convention. For Ballarat House, a new architect-designed home in semi-rural Victoria, they worked with Designer Doorware on custom doorware for an entry that needed more than an off-the-shelf solution.

customised door hardware solution

Because of the width of the entry door, we recommended a custom designed handle running horizontally across its centre to balance the composition. Extensive consultation, research and design produced a solution that met every styling requirement.

The result is a two-metre steel box flush pull handle that sits flush within the timber door, keeping the transition seamless. A row of LED lights built into the pull handle provides night-time visibility and lights up the full width of the door. A lock and doorbell are discreetly integrated to keep the entry minimal and fully functional.

We worked within strict size limits so the pull handle would fit the internal door structure, and we added extra depth for a comfortable grip. The cylinder escutcheon had to be positioned precisely to match the ML60 residential lock, which required accuracy in both design and manufacture. A bronze-toned powder coat finish complements the spotted gum and gives the entry a warm, timeless feel.
