Locks

What do I need to order for a complete lockset?
This depends on the lock type and function.

For most Australian and Euro mortice locks, the lock body is ordered separately from the trim and accessories needed to complete the set.

A complete set may include:

  • lock body
  • cylinder
  • cylinder escutcheon
  • turn snib
  • emergency release
  • lever / handle set
  • strike or faceplate
  • spindles and fixing screws
As a guide:
  • entry lockset: lock body, cylinder, cylinder escutcheon, turn snib, handle set, strikeplate, faceplate, spindles and screws
  • storeroom or classroom lockset: lock body, cylinder, cylinder escutcheon, handle set, strikeplate, faceplate, spindles and screws
  • privacy lockset: lock body, emergency release, turn snib, lever set, strikeplate, faceplate, spindles and screws
  • passage lockset: lock body, handle set, strikeplate, faceplate, spindles and screws
  • double cylinder lockset: lock body, two Aus cylinders / Euro key-key double cylinder, two cylinder escutcheons, handle set, strikeplate, faceplate, spindles and screws
  • patio lockset: lock body, turn snib, handle set, strikeplate, faceplate, spindles and screws
If you are unsure what is required, please contact us before ordering.

Are any locks sold as complete sets?
Yes. DBA11-60 and DSL14 can be treated as complete products.

DBA, DBU and DSL14 deadbolt sets include the main lockset components. Where latch holding is preferred, magnetic catches or roller bolts can be used to help keep the door closed until the deadbolt is engaged. In many applications, a separate latch is not required.

What door thicknesses are your locks suitable for?
As a general guide, the standard door thickness range is 32 to 52mm.

Product-specific guidance:

  • 2000 series mortice locks: 32 to 52mm
  • 2200 nightlatch mortice: 32 to 52mm
  • 5000 series deadbolt mortice: 32 to 52mm
  • 6000 series sliding door lock: 32 to 52mm
  • 2300 and 3000 narrow stile mortice locks: 32 to 52mm
  • tubular latches and bolts: 30 to 52mm
  • DBA11-60 tubular deadbolt set: 36 to 57mm
  • DSL14 smart lock: 35 to 55mm

What is backset and how do I measure it?
Backset is the distance from the edge of the door to the centre of the keyhole or spindle hole.

To measure backset on an existing door:

  • measure from the edge of the door to the centre of the keyhole, or
  • measure from the edge of the door to the centre of the spindle hole
As a general rule, 60mm backset is the most common option in Australia. If the door stile is too narrow, a shorter backset may be required.

What backset options do you offer?
Common options include:

  • ML 2000, 2200, 5000 and 6000 series: 60mm backset
  • NS 2300 series: 23mm backset
  • NS 3000 series: 30mm backset
  • Euro mortice lock, wide long body: 45mm backset and 60mm backset
If you are matching an existing lock or working with a narrow stile door, please check measurements carefully before ordering.

What is the minimum stile width required for locks?
As a guide:

  • NS 2300 series: minimum 40mm lock stile width
  • NS 3000 series: minimum 47mm lock stile width
  • ML 2000, 2200, 5000 and 6000 series: minimum 110mm stile width

What lock functions do you offer?
Our common lock functions include:

  • passage: latch only, no locking
  • privacy: locked by turn snib inside and emergency release outside
  • entry: locked by key outside and turn snib inside
  • double cylinder: locked by key on both sides
  • nightlatch: always locked, opened by key outside or turn snib inside
  • patio lock: locked by key or turn snib inside only
If you are unsure which function suits your door, please contact us for advice.

Do you recommend double cylinder locks?
Double cylinder locks are commonly recommended for glazed entry doors and metal gates, where appropriate. If key / snib function is required for these doors, we recommend a double cylinder with removable key snib.

Please make sure the selected function is suitable for the application and any relevant compliance requirements.

Which locks suit timber, aluminium or steel doors?
As a general guide:

  • ML 2000, ML 5000 and ML 6000 series mortice locks suit timber doors
  • fabricator kits are available for aluminium door applications
  • NS 2300 and NS 3000 series mortice locks suit aluminium doors
    • timber faceplate kits are available for some timber door applications. These can also be adapted for steel door applications.
  • Euro mortice locks suit timber doors
  • steel lock boxes are available for steel doors and gates
If you are ordering for aluminium or steel doors, please confirm the door details with us before purchase.

Are your locks suitable for external doors?
Some lock types and finishes are suitable for external use, depending on the application, door material and exposure level.

If the lock is being used externally, we recommend confirming the exact lock type, finish and door details with our team before ordering.

Are your locks handed, or are they reversible?
Some lock bodies are non-handed or reversible.

Confirmed reversible or non-handed products include:

  • DBA11-60
  • ML 5000 series
  • ML 6000 series
  • Euro locks
If handing matters for your selected product, please check before ordering.

How do I identify if my door is left hand or right hand?
Stand outside the room facing the door.

  • if the handle or lock is on your right, the door is right hand
  • if the handle or lock is on your left, the door is left hand

What cylinder types do your locks use?
Common cylinder options include:

  • ML and NS series locks: C570 oval cylinder
  • 507 nightlatch: C201 rim cylinder
  • Euro locks: C11, C12 and C13 euro cylinders
If you are replacing an existing cylinder, please confirm the lock type before ordering.

Can I order locks keyed alike?
Yes. Keyed alike and keyed different options can be ordered online.

If you need:

  • multiple keyed alike groups
  • master keying
  • construction keying
  • restricted keying
Please contact us before ordering.

How do I order multiple locks keyed alike correctly?
If you need multiple items in the same keyed alike group, these can be ordered online.

If you need different keyed alike groups within the one order, please contact us so we can help configure it correctly.

Which escutcheons, turn snibs and trims work with your locks?
Compatibility depends on the lock type, backset and format.

Common compatible trim options include:

  • R10, R50, R90, R100 and R200 series roses
  • 50, 60, 80 and 100 series plate furniture
  • NE10 and NE50 narrow stile escutcheons
If you are pairing locks with existing levers, roses, plate furniture, turn snibs or emergency releases, please confirm compatibility before ordering.

Do any locks require special adaptors or spindles?
Yes, some applications require specific adaptors.

For example:

  • disabled turn snibs and privacy flush pulls use 5mm spindles and require a special adaptor
    • 2000 series locks use ML-ADP-D adaptor
    • 5000 series locks use ML-ADP-Y-D adaptor
    • Euro mortice locks use SC104 adaptor
If you are unsure, please contact us before ordering.

Are any locks fire rated?
Yes. The ML-2000 mortice lock in vestibule, combination and nightlatch functions has been tested for up to 2 hours on approved fire-rated door sets.

If you need a lock for a fire-rated door, please confirm the full door set requirements before ordering.

What is the difference between accessible compliance and egress compliance?
These requirements are sometimes confused because they share similar handle design principles, including a return at the end of the grip and clearance between the handle and the door or backplate.

However, they are not the same.

For accessible applications, the door should be able to be unlocked and operated with one hand, and the operating force should be below 20Nm.

For egress compliance, the door must allow release by a single-hand pushing action.

If your project has compliance requirements, please confirm the application with us before ordering.

How should I clean and maintain my locks and hardware?
As a general guide:

  • clean with a soft cloth
  • use mild detergent where appropriate
  • avoid harsh solvents, abrasive cleaners, scourers and adhesive tape
Some finishes and materials require specific care:
  • living finishes: may require pure non-abrasive paste wax, depending on the finish
  • timber finishes: should be re-oiled at recommended intervals
  • stainless steel: wash with mild detergent and warm water, then rinse with clean water
  • Monte Sugi: use a soft dry cloth and avoid moisture-prone environments
For full care instructions, please refer to our care and maintenance guide.

What should I check before ordering a replacement lock?
Before ordering, we recommend confirming:

  • door thickness
  • backset
  • door material
  • internal or external application
  • required lock function
  • stile width, if relevant
  • whether keyed alike is required
  • whether you need handles, escutcheons, turn snibs or emergency release trims
  • whether the door is fire rated
  • whether the project has accessible or egress compliance requirements
If you are replacing an existing lock, it also helps to provide the current lock model and key dimensions.

What are the most common ordering mistakes?
The most common issues happen when details are assumed rather than checked.

Before ordering, always confirm:

  • door thickness
  • backset
  • door material
  • stile width where relevant
  • whether extended spindles or cylinder extensions are required
  • whether the selected trim is compatible with the chosen lock

I am not sure what I need. Can you help?
Yes. If you are unsure which lock, function or accessories are required, please contact our team with your door details and we can help guide you to the right solution.
