As one of Australia’s most well-known shopping districts, Chapel Street is a precinct full of Melbournian character.

Just north of the Toorak road end of Chapel Street, however, there was room for a new landmark and the opportunity to extend the retail strip. The Buchan Group was engaged to realize this opportunity with its design for a mixed-use retail and residential complex.

The Buchan Group has a strong track record in the design of successful hotel, residential and resort developments. Nick Nigro, Director of The Buchan Group and the Project Architect for Vogue South Yarra has an impressive list of recent works including Lucient, a  luxury residential development on St. Kilda Road in Melbourne, and the award-winning Intercontinental Hotel Melbourne at the Rialto.

With a strong design ethos, The Buchan Group’s consistent effort to reflect and complement the natural context is always evident in their projects. Designer Doorware’s classic, minimalistic architectural door hardware formed an integral role with door furniture solutions that offered a seamless fit.

Project Brief
The Buchan Group was given the opportunity to establish a mixed-use amenity to extend the retail precinct on vibrant Chapel Street just north of Toorak Road, and develop a cultural and physical addition to the area. A residential tower like no other, the multi-unit residential complex was to be a completely unique development.

Response to the Brief
With the aim of creating a new archetypal design, Vogue South Yarra was built to command significant presence on Chapel Street. A residential tower perched above a retail podium, the exquisite layered detailing, the play of light and shade, and the definition of an elegant glazing system solution makes this tower absolutely 5-star.

The tower glazing as a series of enveloping curtains, reveals large balcony areas for all the apartments, providing an incredible view of the Yarra River and CBD area. The curved, free-flowing form creates the illusion of a changing form when viewed from different angles.

Working closely with The Buchan Group, Designer Doorware along with the builders involved, successfully helped to design and deliver an impressive South Yarra landmark.

The Architectural Door Hardware Solution
Vogue South Yarra was designed to respond to the hard urban edges of the surrounding context. This was achieved by clever variance in material and designs throughout the building.

The timeless quality of classic, urban and minimal aesthetics are reflected in Designer Doorware's Prisma door handles on a round R30 rose, finished in polished chrome.  Especially developed for high volume, project applications, Prisma on R30  was chosen as a complementary and practical expression of The Buchan Group’s design response.

A sliding door track was custom designed to further fit the aesthetic, while giving high functionality to the usage application. Sliding door hardware included sleek, rectangular flush pulls FP61 finished in polished chrome, while mushroom doorstop DS2, made from zinc and finished in polished chrome, was a complementry accessory for swinging doors, along with H24 Door closers with slide arm in polished stainless steel.
